Hello everyone, long time no see. For the first time, I’ve actually no excuse for my lack of activity. Perhaps I just wanted to wait until it felt right. I hope you all are doing well.

One year and one month ago, I moved here to Tokyo to attend university and began living a semi-independent adult life for the first time, ever. I remember being so excited at first, but exploding into tears when my mom got on the subway bound for the airport. Even my mom didn’t expect me to cry like that. The reality of being “on my own” didn’t hit me until that moment.

It didn’t take me long to recover, however, and before I knew it, I was making friends and memories left and right. Perhaps the biggest surprise to everyone, including me, was the sudden change in my “relationship status”, a common reaction being “What? You JUST moved there!” Everyone thought I was being dooped! Happy to say we recently celebrated our one-year anniversary at Tokyo Disneyland.

Between school, work and my small but well rounded social circle, I’ve gained so much knowledge and experience in a very short time frame. There have been several unique challenges I’ve had to face, from figuring out how things like taxes and insurance work (while not in my native language or country) to learning how to master public transportation (and my legs) as a means to get around. I love challenges because they push me to think creatively and critically, and I’m always wiser on the other side of them.

I’ve really come to love and appreciate this city and the country in which it stands. Since childhood, I’ve had an admiration for Japan, but it wasn’t until living here that I became filled with true respect and gratitude for it. After seeing the good, the bad and the ugly, I’m still as in love with this place as I was at 10 years old, praying that one day, if for just even a few hours, I could go to this place across the ocean called Tokyo…
